After graduating from Shaw University, Maggie Walker's youngest son Melvin worked as a teller and bookkeeper at St. Luke Penny Savings Bank. Melvin, his wife Ethel and their three children lived with Maggie Walker in the family home. As a member of the Independent Order of St. Luke (IOSL), Melvin Walker received annual dividends and held voting rights. IOSL held campaigns over the years to increase membership and account holders as described in this letter.
